Three results show. You are the fourth.
It is the most demoralizing position in local search, because from where you sit it looks identical to not existing. It is not identical, and the gap between those two things is worth understanding before deciding what to spend on.
What actually still reaches you
Four surfaces, roughly in order of how much they matter:
The expanded list. A searcher who is not satisfied by the first three opens the longer set of local results. Fourth is near the top of that. This is the single largest thing being written off by owners who only ever check the pack.
Your own name. Everyone who is told about you by a neighbor, a discharge planner, a body shop or a friend types your name, not your category. That search does not care where you rank for anything, and what surfaces for it is entirely within reach.
Organic, below the pack. The blue links are still there, they still get clicked, and they are won by pages rather than by proximity.
Everywhere that is not Google. Directories, review sites, Nextdoor, the referral relationships you already have. Smaller, but they are not competing for three slots.
The honest part
None of this is a substitute for a pack position. The pack is where the majority of the phone calls live, and pretending otherwise would be a comfortable lie — the case for it is straightforward.
So the fourth position is not a place to settle. It is a place with more traffic than it feels like, which buys you the time to fix the things that decide the ranking without panicking into something expensive.
What to fix first, from fourth
The order matters more than the list, because the cheap items are also the fast ones:
- Primary category, checked against what the three above you use
- Every profile field completed — services entered individually, hours right, description written
- Reviews: the count and the recency, not just the average
- Listings that agree with each other on name, address and phone
- Pages on your own site that are about the service and the place, rather than about the company
Nothing there is a secret. It is the same list as everyone’s, and the reason it works is that most competitors do about half of it and then stop.
The measurement trap
At fourth, the temptation is to check the pack daily and judge everything by whether the order changed today. It varies by the searcher’s location, so this produces a lot of feeling and very little information.
Watch calls and direction requests instead. Those are events with a person attached, and a week of them says more than a month of refreshing a search you already know the answer to. Which figures are worth reading is a subject of its own.
Fix the profile fundamentals first, because they are the cheapest and the fastest to correct. What that involves, plan by plan, is on the services page.
