Your business isn’t showing up in ChatGPT because your public record — Google Business Profile, reviews, website — doesn’t make you the obvious answer. Ask ChatGPT “who’s a good mobile detailer near me?” and it names two or three businesses, then stops. There is no page two. None of the names are you.
Nobody paid to keep you out. Your record is just thinner than the one that got named, and that is a fixable problem.
Why isn’t my business showing up in ChatGPT or Gemini?
Because the assistants read the same public record Google reads, and yours isn’t telling a clear enough story. ChatGPT and Gemini name the businesses whose profile, reviews, and website make them look established, specific, and safe to recommend. If your details are thin, out of date, or inconsistent across the web, the model can’t be confident you’re the right answer — so it names someone it can be confident about.
Getting named isn’t a separate skill from local SEO. It’s the same substance: the work that gets you recommended by ChatGPT is the work that ranks you on Maps.
How do AI assistants decide who to name?
They weigh four inputs, and being weak on any one of them can leave you out. AI recommendations come down to how complete and consistent your public record is across these four places:
- Your Google Business Profile. Category, services, service areas, hours, and reviews. A half-finished profile is the single most common reason a business is invisible to AI — fix it with the Google Business Profile checklist.
- Your reviews — the words, not just the score. Assistants quote review language. If nobody’s review says you clean roofs, the model won’t recommend you for roof cleaning, even with five stars. Steady, specific reviews are the fuel — here’s the system for earning them.
- Your website. Plain pages that state what you do, where, and roughly what it costs. Question-shaped content gets lifted directly; a wall of marketing copy gets skipped.
- Consistency everywhere else. Your name, address, and phone should match across every directory and listing. Mismatches make you look like a maybe, and machines don’t recommend a maybe — that’s why NAP consistency matters.
This is the same weighting we walk through in the AI search checklist, and it’s why Gemini leans so heavily on your Google presence.
How do I check if I’m invisible to AI right now?
Open ChatGPT and Gemini and ask, in a customer’s words: “Who should I call for [your service] in [your city]?” You’ll get one of three results. You’re either named (screenshot it and protect the position), your competitors are named and you aren’t (their record is more complete — fixable), or the assistant gives generic advice and names nobody (no one in your market has claimed the answer yet, so the first mover takes it).
Run it today. Five minutes, and it tells you exactly where you stand.
Worth doing now rather than later, because owners are already asking. Our own Search Console picks up queries like “how to get business recommended by chatgpt” and “get business recommended by gemini” — people typing that phrase are business owners, not customers. Some of them are your competitors.
What’s actually keeping me out of the answer?
Most invisibility traces back to a handful of fixable causes. The usual suspects, roughly in order of how often they’re the culprit:
- An incomplete or unclaimed Google Business Profile. The foundation everything else reads from.
- Too few reviews, or reviews that don’t describe your actual services. The model has nothing specific to quote.
- A website that never says, in plain words, what you do and where. If “gutter cleaning in Waco” appears nowhere in text, you can’t be the answer to it.
- Inconsistent name, address, or phone across listings. Every mismatch chips away at trust.
- A brand-new or barely-active presence. Assistants favor businesses that look consistently established, so a profile you set up last week rarely wins yet.
None of these require a trick. They require the same fundamentals that get you found on Google — which is the honest reason we don’t sell “AI SEO” as a separate product. If your business is invisible on Google too, start with why your business isn’t showing up on Google; the fixes overlap almost entirely.
How long until I show up after fixing it?
Weeks, usually. Not overnight. The assistants rebuild their picture of your market on their own schedule and lean toward businesses that look established, so a fixed profile earns its place gradually instead of flipping on the moment you hit save.
That slowness cuts both ways, and mostly in your favor. Once you’re the named answer you’re as hard to shift as the competitor you replaced. There’s no daily ad auction to lose — just the assistants quietly settling on who the safe answer is, and then staying there. Clear, helpfully-structured content is what Google itself points to in its guide to AI features in Search, and the assistants reading your pages want the same thing.
The next step
Being skipped by ChatGPT isn’t a verdict — it’s a gap in your public record.
