The badge above the map pack is not a ranking

A card naming relevance, distance and prominence as the three ranking factors Google publishes for local results

The badge that sits above a local search — Google Verified today, Google Screened and Google Guaranteed until recently — is an advertising program with a background check attached. It is not an organic ranking. Google says it plainly on its own help pages: all provider listings in Local Services are displayed and ranked based on an auction, where the highest ranked ads show first.

That distinction is worth holding onto, because the badge is sold to owners as though it were a rank, and it has just changed shape.

Two badges became one, and the guarantee went with them

Read first-party on Google’s Local Services help pages on 30 August 2026: Google says it is “simplifying our advertiser badging by launching a single badge for all advertisers.” Existing advertisers who have completed the verification requirements earn the new Google Verified badge automatically, with no action needed. New advertisers have to complete the screening and verification process to get it.

The second half of that announcement is the part nobody forwards. In Google’s words, “Google will be discontinuing the Money Back Guarantee associated with the Google Guarantee badge.” Eligible consumers could submit a reimbursement request for services booked through Local Services Ads before December 7, 2025, and requests had to be filed within 30 days of the initial service completion date.

So the consumer promise that gave the old badge most of its weight in a sales conversation no longer exists. The badge remains; the guarantee behind it does not.

What the badge certifies now

Google’s description of it is narrow and worth quoting rather than paraphrasing: the badge “helps inspire confidence by signaling to consumers that your business has passed Google’s proprietary screening process,” and verified profiles display the badge “along with the specific verification checks they have completed.”

That is a screening result. Licenses, business registration, background checks depending on the vertical. It tells a customer something real about who they are letting into their driveway or their treatment room. It tells them nothing about position, and Google’s own note on the change is explicit that Local Services Ads ranking is not affected by it.

The ranking underneath is an auction

Google’s ad rankings page: listings are displayed and ranked by auction, driven by the bid, how likely the ad is to produce a lead, and the business’s own responsiveness and reviews. Its Local Services getting-started page adds that a provider who regularly fails to answer calls or respond to messages may find its ad ranking affected.

Three results, one screen: an auction unit, keyword ads, and a map pack that is not for sale. Only one of those three is decided by anything other than money, and the industry sells the other two harder.

Your trade may not be on the list at all

Google publishes the United States category list. Read on 30 August 2026, it runs to 254 categories, and the pattern matters if you take your service to a customer’s address:

  • Detailing is on it. Car Detailing Service, Car Wash and Auto Window tinting Service all appear.
  • Parts of aesthetics are on it. Facial Spa, Hair Removal Service, Weight loss service, Massage therapist and Dermatologist appear. There is no “med spa” category.
  • Home care is not on it. Child care is a category. Home care, senior care and caregiving are not.

Then the line that decides it for two of our three pillars, in Google’s words: “The Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty, and dining categories.” A detailing shop can run Local Services Ads and cannot earn the badge. Neither can a facial spa. (Which trades the list leaves out, and when paying is the right call at all.)

What this changes about the work

Nothing, and that is the point of writing it down. We do not buy or manage ads. The badge is not something we can obtain for anyone, and no part of any plan promises it.

What it changes is what you should believe when someone shows you a screenshot of a badge and calls it a ranking.

The pack sitting below the ads is the only unit on that screen nobody bids for. Getting into consideration for it is profile work, review work and citations built once and owned — the work on every plan.

Common questions

Is the Google Verified badge a ranking signal?

No. Google states that all provider listings in Local Services are displayed and ranked based on an auction, where the highest ranked ads show first, and that Local Services Ads ranking is not affected by the badge change. The badge signals that a business has passed Google's screening process, which is a separate thing from an organic search position.

What happened to Google Screened and Google Guaranteed?

Google consolidated them into one badge. Google's Local Services help pages, read on 30 August 2026, state that Google is simplifying advertiser badging by launching a single badge for all advertisers, and that eligible existing advertisers who have completed verification requirements automatically earn the new Google Verified badge with no action required.

Is the Google Guarantee money-back guarantee still available?

No. Google states that it is discontinuing the Money Back Guarantee associated with the Google Guarantee badge, and that eligible consumers could submit a reimbursement request for services booked through Local Services Ads before December 7, 2025, within 30 days of the initial service completion date.

Can a home care agency run Local Services Ads?

Not under a home care category. Google's United States Local Services category list, read on 30 August 2026, contains Child care but no home care, senior care or caregiving category. Car Detailing Service, Facial Spa, Weight loss service and Massage therapist are on the list, though Google states the Verified badge is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty and dining categories.
